On September 14, 2024, I had the privilege of volunteering my photography services at the Girl Scouts’ 5K Into The Woods Trail Run in Lizella, Georgia. Held at the scenic Camp Martha Johnston, this early morning race began at 8:35 a.m., following a rainy night that left the woods damp and atmospheric. Runners embarked on a challenging journey through 165 acres of diverse landscapes, including hardwood forests, Sweetwater Creek, and rugged terrain filled with gravel, sand, mud, roots, and rocks. Despite cloudy skies and light rain near the end, participants were energized by the adventure and the rustic beauty of the camp, which has been a beloved Girl Scout retreat since 1925. The race was more than just a run; it was an opportunity for the community to reconnect with nature, finishing the day around a cozy fire with traditional s’mores. The 5K trail run at Camp Martha Johnston perfectly combined the thrill of a race with the timeless joy of Girl Scout camping traditions.
